What will be your impact as Director of the Mechanical Engineering Department? Under the authority of the Executive Director of Academic Affairs, you will direct the entire operations and resources of your department and manage the development, application, and implementation of your department's triennial plan and programs aimed at ensuring the healthy use of allocated resources. You will be responsible for managing activities related to teaching and research. You will act as an expert advisor and partner to management in your area of expertise. On a daily basis, you:
- Direct the human resources under your responsibility and promote the development of their skills. Are responsible for maintaining a healthy and harmonious work climate, respecting the code of conduct and civility, rules, policies, conventions, and protocols applicable, as well as occupational health and safety rules. Act as a mediator for conflict resolution between team members.
- Participate in the selection of technical and support staff under your responsibility, initiate them to work, assist them in performing their tasks by setting specific goals, supervise and evaluate them. Depending on the department's objectives, evaluate and verify the results of your team's work and make necessary corrections, if applicable. Schedule at least one quarterly meeting with the technical team and with the office team. Ensure that a professional development plan is established with support staff and offer them training, if necessary.
- Plan, organize, direct, and control your team's activities according to their field of intervention to achieve your department's triennial plan. Develop and manage the department's budget based on institutional priorities and ensure the establishment of working groups to achieve the department's strategic objectives.
- Ensure the development and evolution of the department within the framework of the School's mission, in accordance with the specific objectives entrusted to you and according to the evolution of the technology applicable to the teaching of courses relevant to your department.
- Develop a three-year development plan for the department within the framework of the School's mission and submit it to the Executive Director of Academic Affairs.
- Convene departmental assemblies and retreats of departmental professors, in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement in force. Prepare the agenda, organize the meeting, chair the assembly and carry out the various follow-ups.
- Prepare, for the academic year, a draft allocation of teaching tasks for professors, in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement in force, and submit it for approval to the departmental assembly.
- Manage the programming of courses to be offered (number and size of course groups, teaching methods) and allocate courses among professors and lecturers. Hire the required lecturers for the session and present the allocation to the professors' assembly. Designate a professor responsible for each course in the program.
- Submit annually to the Executive Director of Academic Affairs, following consultation with the department's professors, the needs for professorial resources. Document the needs with a description of the new positions to be filled based on the required fields of competence.
- Chair the selection committees used to fill new professor positions and replacements.
- Attend the Teaching and Research Coordination Committee (CCER). You ensure the follow-up of institutional decisions made during these meetings and implement the necessary processes within your department. Communicate and circulate relevant information to your team.
- Are responsible for any project to modify first-cycle programs and their duly authorized implementation by the relevant authorities, and this, in collaboration with the Dean of Studies. Participate in the process of developing new first-cycle teaching programs in your department. May be called upon, as needed, to participate in various stages of developing new higher education programs in fields related to those covered by the department.
- Ensure the establishment and proper functioning of the institutional committee for continuous improvement of bachelor's programs (CIAC-PB) and the research committee in your department (CRD).
- Validate the annual teaching plan and the annual work report of professors.
- Proceed with a fair allocation of supervision of end-of-study projects among the professors in your department, in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement in force, and approve all subjects.
- Promote institutional excellence awards among professors and lecturers.
- Monitor the evaluations of professors and lecturers. Meet, as needed, with certain professors and lecturers to discuss improvements that can be made to teaching or course content. Sit on the departmental committee for evaluating professors.
- Ensure the follow-up of plagiarism cases and student complaints and chair the activities of the departmental discipline committee. Ensure the follow-up of the necessary documents for all plagiarism cases and transmit the files to the institutional discipline committee for more serious cases. As needed, meet with students who must follow a particular path during sanctions.
- Plan the office and laboratory spaces of the department and optimize their use. Authorize access to the premises and ensure compliance with health and safety rules at work.
- You are in charge of preparing the file to be presented to the engineering accreditation office for all programs in your department, and this, in collaboration with various administrative resources of the School. You are in charge of preparing the file to be presented to the interuniversity cooperation office, if applicable.
- You are responsible for coordinating the department's student promotion and recruitment activities. You ensure the maintenance of the student clientele in the first cycle.
- Represent the department on various decision-making and institutional committees. Participate in the School's meetings and networking activities.
- Act as an official representative during visits from funding organizations for chair files submitted by a professor from your department. Support and support the initiatives of department professors in their funding requests.
- Ensure the follow-up of associate professor status requests. Ensure the availability of space occupations for visiting professors.
- Accomplish any other mandate entrusted to you by your superior.
