In accordance with the professional staff classification plan, orientation counsellor positions involve more specifically counselling, support, and evaluation of the psychological functioning, personal resources, and environmental conditions of students. The orientation counsellor intervenes in vocational identity as well as in the development and maintenance of active adaptation strategies in order to enable personal and professional choices.
| YOUR MAIN CHALLENGES |
Under the authority of the coordinator responsible for the service, more specifically, the selected person will have as main responsibilities to:
- Participate in the implementation of the orientation service's objectives, taking into account the success plan and the needs of the student community in terms of orientation;
- Hold individual or group meetings with students;
- Evaluate and determine an intervention plan to enable personal and professional choices and to achieve their study project;
- Advise students on academic and professional information, study programs, admission modalities, and potential outlets for different training programs;
- Exercise a counselling role with students in their vocational choice by evaluating, in particular, the student's psychological functioning, personal resources, interests, aptitudes, personality traits, and intellectual, cognitive, and affective functions;
- Intervene in the construction of identity, its clarification, and its transposition into professional terms in a preventive, educational, and curative manner, by establishing a significant helping relationship with the person;
- Act on issues related to indecision, lack of vocational objective, loss of meaning surrounding the study project, adaptation or performance problems in studies, work, or life;
- Advise students on learning strategies;
- Ensure being up-to-date with the tools or tests used to counsel students;
- Keep up to date the files of the students met;
- Produce and keep up to date documents and guides intended for students in connection with learning strategies and the transition to university (work method, R score, etc.);
- See to verifying and keeping up to date the information appearing on conventional documents, on the Cégep's website or Omnivox relating to guidance services;
- Lead workshops, activities, information or training meetings related to career choices, courses of study and professional outlets;
- Participate in the coordination of university visits;
- Participate in university and school information activities;
- Stay informed about job market trends and training programs;
- Advise students on the different programs offered at the university and college levels, their admission requirements and career prospects;
- Guide the student, help them understand the meaning of information about different professions (prospects, working conditions, task evolution, etc.);
- Participate in college activities aimed at providing information to future candidates (Open House Day, Partners' Day, New Admissions Meetings, etc.);
- Participate in service meetings and various committees and advisory or decision-making bodies of the Cégep (for example: Study Commission, Learning and Success Support Plan Committee, etc.);
- Collaborate, as needed, in the implementation of projects related to their field of intervention and, possibly, design group activities related to a guidance theme;
- Accomplish, as needed, any other related task.
| REQUIREMENTS |
- Be a member in good standing of the Ordre des conseillers et conseillères d'orientation du Québec (OCCOQ) and remain so.
Particular requirements
- Possess practical experience in counseling, assistance, animation and information functions for students and teaching staff;
- Possess a good knowledge of the Règlement sur le régime des études collégiales and the programs offered by the Cégep.

- Have an appropriate knowledge of job market trends and programs offered in universities and other educational institutions;
- Have a good knowledge of the tools and psychometric tests used to assess the student's personal resources;
- Possess a usual knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, among others);
- Possess the necessary skills for animation.
| REQUIRED TESTS |
- Linguistic evaluation tests: elimination threshold set at 80% with possibility of conditional hiring at 70%.
