About the position
The Library and Archives of the Canadian Museum of Nature are located on the Museum's Nature Heritage Campus. The Archives house approximately 1.5 linear kilometers of unpublished documents, primarily institutional records. These institutional records provide insight into past and present activities related to our exhibitions, research, collections, and administration; they tell us stories about field trips, discoveries, exhibitions, our natural world, and much more.
The archival technician will be responsible for the classification and description of the paleobiology archives. These archives contain manuscripts, correspondence, field notebooks, photographs, and other documents that attest to the research, activities, and discoveries of former researchers and curators in the paleobiology division. The archival technician will improve access to these archival holdings by creating and publishing digital research tools to facilitate research and discovery by the public.
Under the supervision of the archivist, the archival technician will:
- Process archival documents (re-housing, sorting, and labeling);
- Examine and structure archival series and file levels within the holdings;
- Create standardized descriptive catalog records in accordance with the Rules for Archival Description (RAD) using Microsoft Excel and the AtoM software;
- Digitize and integrate digitized documents into the institutional digital repository;
- Collaborate with researchers, staff, and volunteers in an interdisciplinary work environment.
